What Are We?

LitFire Publishing September 15, 2016

What are we in the universe,
And how do we contribute to its progress?
In truth, we are nothing else
Other than dust made alive by Your breath.

A little less than the angels You created man,
And then You blessed him;
You made for him an appropriate help,
And thus his need for a companion You fulfilled.

We were made to be the crown of creation,
To communicate with God,
To confront our ego with the Lord’s salvation

Through the power of His blood.

What are we in the universe,
How big do we see ourselves,

How is our walk, how do we run our race,
And what do we believe about ourselves?

We are of great importance
Before Him who created us,
And yet we are too often without thoughtfulness

When we are challenged by sin, by it so harassed.

Our life is as a blade of grass,
As a beautiful flower which the wind blows,
As a steam that appears for a little while; thus
It is like a thought that into nothingness quickly goes.

God gave us wisdom and strength,
As well as ability, joy, and energy;
And He put in us His breath
That we may inherit this earth that He made so exquisitely.

He endowed us with responsibility
And He showed us His way from above;
Through Him we can put on humility –
By His grace and the power of His love

What are we and what do we believe about ourselves
When we are without control in the midst of temptation,

When we are totally powerless,

Filled with pain and confusion?

From the very beginning,
Mankind declined the offer of the Lord
To live in obedience to His will
And to be doers of His Word.

That is why mankind sinned,
And so the relationship with the Creator was broken;
Thus death and a curse came and filled
The lives of all of us – our joy was stolen.

Yet the history of human existence was not over –
Out of Eden, God sent away the two of them;
For also through His creation, through the woman,
He would bring salvation to mankind through His Son – the divine Lamb.

He sent His Son to come to this sick world
To bear our image; to live on this earth;

To take the burden of our sin, heavy and cold;

And to grant us forgiveness and spiritual birth.

What are we? We are nothing
Without Jesus Christ who saved us –
We are filled with all kinds of needs and we bring
To Him our weakness, for we are made out of dust.

So, let us always remember
That when we want to be
Arrogant and boastful without care,
We are in fact frail and in need.

We also should not liken ourselves to lower creatures,
For we were made for other realities,
To accept the evidence of another picture –
That of us as Your children who must come before You in humility.

We were created for the reality of prayer
In order to bring You Your due worship,

To love and help each other,
And to follow Your plan under Your leadership.

So who are we in the universe?
We are big and yet we are small;

What do you think about yourself
When you are proud and yet fearful through it all?

We are needy; we are travelers;
We all have a history –
A beginning and an end –
And that is why we should learn to live victoriously.

What are we in universe?
We are as small as ants,
And yet You chose us
To carry out Your great plan.

And by Your plan that is perfect and good,
We have Your Holy Spirit within,

We are a chosen priesthood –
A nation removed from the dominion of sin.

What are we now in the universe –
Now that we have stepped onto this other road?

We are the salt of the earth,
The light of the world, through the power of the Word.

History goes on, and we will be ageless –
We will receive our heavenly reward,

We will be with the heavenly angels
And with You whom we love, the incarnate Word.
